Increased investment in the BC Arts Council is critical to keeping our province's cultural sector competitive and sustainable. In 2016/2017, Statistics Canada and data from provincial funders indicate that BC ranks only seventh in per-capita provincial and territorial arts council spending on culture despite the fact that British Columbia has more artists per capita than any other province, with a combined workforce of over 81,385 cultural workers and a cultural GDP of $6.7 billion (the third highest in Canada).
Despite this reality, the number of cultural jobs in BC has decreased by 4.5% (3,800 jobs) since 2010 while the number of cultural jobs nationally increased by .84% (5,275 jobs) in that same time period.
We have to work together and speak in a unified voice for the increased investment BC arts, culture and heritage needs to thrive. Click through our Action web app and complete each step to advocate for the arts -- and don't forget to vote in the provincial election on May 9!
